5) The Valentine Day Massacre: Oscar Pistorius

In 2012, Pistorius — nicknamed the Blade Runner — emerged from the Summer Olympics as a heroic figure. As the first double amputee runner to compete in the games, he had impressed the world with his valiant efforts against so-called able-bodied competitors. He finished eighth in the 400m semifinals and helped the South African team take an eighth-place finish in the 4x400m relay final. He then went on to the Paralympics where he won two gold medals and a silver and set records in both the 400m and the 4x100m relay. He returned to South Africa a hero.

But then, approximately six months later, Pistorius would shoot his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, to death on Valentine’s Day. The beautiful model and reality television star was killed as she crouched behind a closed door in Pistorius’s bathroom. While the Blade Runner has claimed that he shot Steenkamp because he thought she was a burglar, prosecutors in the case believe that he intentionally murdered the model, possibly after a fight. The trial, at the time of this writing, is still ongoing.
