4) Fatal Attraction: Sid Vicious

When the Sex Pistols roared onto the scene in the late 1970s, the world wasn’t sure what hit them. The four punkers — Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Sid Vicious — played music faster and with more bad attitude than any other band to have hit the scene before them. But — according to the band’s famous manager Malcolm McLaren, it was Vicious who truly personified what the punk rock scene was all about. As McLaren put it, “If Johnny Rotten is the voice of punk, then Vicious is the attitude.”

Vicious — real name John Simon Ritchie — however was on a crash course towards destruction, especially after he entered into a turmoil-filled relationship with Nancy Spungen. The two were heroin addicts and, on October 12, 1978, Vicious, 21, stabbed Nancy, 20, to death while he was high. The singer was arrested for second-degree murder and then was released on bail. Not long after, Vicious slashed his forearms with a knife, crying, “I want to be with my Nancy!”

On February 1, 1979, Vicious — who had just gone through forced rehab — overdosed. In yet another odd twist to the punker’s story, his mother — a heroin addict herself — reportedly confessed that she had been the one who had supplied the heroin to Vicious and had also been present when he shot himself up for the last time.
